Principal/Lead Product Designer

Full-time / Part-time · London / Remote

Geckoboard is a growing product company on a mission — we’re enabling a fresh way of working and transforming the way businesses achieve their goals by making their most important data visible, understandable, and inspiring for teams.

As our most senior Product Designer you’ll lead the design work on challenging, rewarding, and high-impact projects across the company, and will be empowered to use your knowledge and experience to improve how we work.

Product and Design is at the heart of Geckoboard: we believe that we’ll be successful if we build something great that genuinely serves the needs of our customers. You’ll work across our small cross-functional product teams, closely collaborating with our Product Designer, Product Managers, Engineers, and QA. We take a lean approach to designing, developing and iterating on features at pace, so within your first 90 days you can expect to ship something you’ve worked on and evaluate the impact of that work.

Partnering closely with our VP of Product (who you’ll report in to) and the rest of the Product team, you’ll help define our longer-term product vision and play a key role in improving how we do great work at Geckoboard. This role has no line management responsibilities, but as a Lead individual contributor you will be expected to act as a model and mentor to others in the team, helping everyone learn and grow.

As our Lead Product Designer you will:

  • Lead the design work on major projects from beginning to end: research, ideation, prototyping, testing, launching, evaluating, and iterating. You’ll spend the majority of your time directly on design work, from high-level user journey mapping and system design through to high-fidelity UI design.
  • Develop a deep understanding of our users and the reasons why they use Geckoboard. You’ll organise and conduct user research and testing sessions, dig into data and previous insights, and work closely with Product Managers.
  • Collaborate and create a shared understanding across the team. You’ll communicate clearly through documentation and presentations, explaining the rationale for your ideas and the trade-offs involved. You’ll also get others involved by leading workshops to explore problems, generate ideas, and hear feedback.
  • Level up how we work. Whether through your feedback and mentorship to other designers, or through process changes and collaborating with our VP of Product, you’ll strive to improve how we build a great product.

You should apply if:

  • You have experience working on complex design projects, from start to finish, in a startup environment*.
  • You’re excited about designing data products, and understand that designing them to be simple is a result of grappling with, and mastering, their inherent complexity - not avoiding it.
  • You measure the quality of your work by the impact it has for real users.
  • You enjoy sharing your knowledge and helping everyone grow and improve: perhaps having mentored other designers in the past.
  • You design systems, not just screens, and can zoom out to consider the entire user experience beyond the product itself.
  • You’re comfortable starting with ambiguity and are happy to get hands on to understand a problem, whether through user research or digging into data.
  • You can balance speed with quality, and prototype at the appropriate fidelity to explore an idea.
  • You facilitate great design: whether that means pairing with front-end developers, running workshops, or working with other designers to improve our processes.

* We know there are great Product Designers from other backgrounds, but given the seniority of this role, we’re focused on finding who knows what good design practices look like in environments similar to ours. If you haven’t worked in an in-house product development team before, are interested in other Product Design opportunities, or perhaps aren’t sure whether this role is right for you, head to www.geckoboard.com/careers and get in touch. We're growing and we’d love to hear from you and chat about this or future opportunities to join the Geckoboard team!

Work your best:

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, our office remains closed and everyone on the team is working from home presently. We’re unlikely to open the office in the short term, but are keeping a close eye on the situation and guidance. We plan to open our office only when it’s safe to do so again.

When there’s not a pandemic going on, most of our team split their week between our London office and working remotely, while some work fully remote. For this position we’re looking for someone who would be happy to work from the office a couple of times per week when it reopens and is safe to commute to.

We're big on being a flexible workplace. Day-to-day we have core hours and allow you to decide how you work around that. We consider 25 days of holiday a year to be a minimum, not a maximum, and have a flexible working policy so that if you need to step out for a school run, an appointment now and again, or something else, it's no problem. Some of our team also have shorter working weeks and we’re more than happy to try to accommodate this or another arrangement when possible.

Logistics:

At this time, we’re only considering candidates who are (or will be) based in the United Kingdom (with a preference for someone who would be willing to spend part of their week working from our office when it reopens). We can also help with visa sponsorship and relocation.

Our hiring process:

  • 20-30 minute call with a Talent Partner.
  • Video call with Ben, our VP of Product.
  • Virtual onsite with the team, broken into three smaller sessions.

The whole process usually takes about 3 weeks end to end, but we’re flexible and will do our best to accommodate timings that will work for you. As you progress through the stages, your Talent Partner will share feedback and information on what to expect/prepare for.

Geckoboard is an equal opportunity employer with teammates all around the world. We're committed to building a company that embraces and celebrates diversity in all its forms, and is truly welcoming and inclusive to all. We’re always looking for people from diverse backgrounds with unique perspectives and skills to join our team, and encourage anyone interested to apply.

We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion or belief, colour, national origin, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, age, marital or civil partner status, pregnancy, veteran status, or disability status.
